A pupil of Alexandre Cabanel, Calbet first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1880 and continuously thereafter up until his death in 1944. Known primarily for his impressionistic watercolours of women, he also worked as a decorative painter in the interior design schemes of belle epoque theatres and restaurants, as well as being a prolific book illustrator. Exhibitions of his work were held at the Galérie George's Petit in 1909 and a retrospective exhibition at the Galérie Graat Paris in 1932.
