Born at Rome, Carlo Delpini was the leading Pantomime artist of his day, he was engaged by David Garrick for the Drury Lane Theatre in about 1774. There, at Covent Garden Theatre, and at The Haymarket, he supplied the mechanical arrangements for the many pantomimes in which he acted. Delpini's best known pantomime was Robinson Crusoe, from which this engraving is a scene, in which he played the hero to the Man Friday of "Signor" Giuseppe Grimaldi. He also arranged entertainments at Brighton for the Prince of Wales later George IV. In his later years he fell into poverty, and died on13 February 1828.
