Born in Ferryside, south of Carmarthen, Morland Lewis trained at St John’s Wood School of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools in London, where he met Walter Sickert becoming his pupil and assistant, his paintings clearly reflect Sickert's influence. He became a member of the London Artists’ Association in 1930 and taught at The Chelsea College of Art. Employed as a camouflage officer during the Second World War, he died from malaria in North Africa in 1943 when he was aged just 41. His work largely concentrated on seaside towns in West Wales as well as port scenes in Ireland, London and France.
