Pablo Martin Melitón de Saraste y Navascués 1844-1908. Was a celebrated Spanish violinist, composer and conductor of the Romantic period. His best known works include "Zigeunerweisen" "Spanish Dances" and the "Carmen Fantasy" he first appeared in London in 1861 and toured the World extensively. In 1884 He sat for James Whistler, whose "Arrangement in Black: Portrait of Sĕnor Pablo De Saraste" is now in the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh. Walter Greaves being Whistler's close friend and studio assistant may well have produced this portrait at the same time.
